The Online Members database now contains more than the CD-ROM. We made the decision to place the data online so it is searchable. It also allows the ability to cross refence grave numbers, so user can identify family members. We can also update the records on a realtime basis.

Viv,
The map is not on the online database it is here, in useful links..........

PS, You only need to write one post--as all posts are initially moderated prior to posting to keep out advertisers. The post then waits for one of us to approve it, which is a bind I know but it seems to be the only way to keep various advertisements out.

It is interesting to see the map of Beckett Street Cemetery but I can't see any reference to the War Graves section. Could anyone please tell me where to find the grave of Pte Frank Berry. CWGC gives the location as C10837. I can see a section C on the map close to Beckett St. Is this where I should be looking when I visit Leeds at the end of this month. Where is the best place to park?

The cemetery is directly opposite St James Hospital.
Council car parks opposite hospital entrance (meter) if space available.

I think the CWGC reference maybe wrong, Grave 10837 is in Section "V". Enter the Cemetery from Shakespeare Street (If there is an entrance still there),into Mason's Way, turn into Bishops Row, keep walking straight on into Anglican Walk, the second turning on the right is Metcalfe Row. Walk along Metcalfe Row until it starts to bend into Glebe Walk and Grave 10837 is on the left side, seven graves in.
The grave closest to the path in the same row is 10069.
(The grave also contains Mary Elizabeth, Thomas and Lawrence)
I hope this helps.

Very many thanks, Mike, for that info - I would have probably had a wasted journey if I had gone to section C. In fact you have also answered 3 questions that I haven't yet asked, with the details of the extra 3 burials. They are my gt grandparents and my gt uncle. Lawrence Berry was Pte Frank Berry's brother. Until now, I had no idea where they were buried. 'Granny' Berry was the Mother in Law of Herd Oates whose family ran Oates saddlers in Lowerhead Row for more than 200 years. If anyone has any connections with these families I would be delighted to hear from them.
Incidentally, I wonder whether there has been an error with the other CWGC grave references.

Following on from this, I have now offered to photograph for a colleague, the CWGC grave of 29927 Pte George Marsden grave no U20817. Is this in the same area at Beckett St as the grave of Pte Frank Berry.
Any help would be very welcome and then I can take both photos on the same day.

Grave 20817 is in section "N" (Click on the attachment to enlarge it and see the grave almost at the bottom in the centre.) If you use the below in conjuction with the hand drawn map of the Cemetery in our Cemeteries and Crematoriums section you should be able to locate the grave.

Sorry to take over this thread with my query but Mike can you just explain one thing. As grave 10837 is not in the War Grave section, do you think that the headstone will be a family one rather than CWGC? Very many thanks for your help.

Brian - thank you for the car park details. It will all have changed since I worked at St James's many years ago.

Hi June,
I am not sure it could well be part of a family gravestone, I have also seen a CWGC stone placed in the centre of an existing plot, it will be interesting to see. Maybe you can let me have copies of the photographs you take
to add to our collection.

All the best
MIke.

Hi June,
As in my previous post, I have photographed about half of the war graves in Beckett St Cem. The reason I didn't photograph the others is because they were not immediately obvious and therefore are probably family graves and not the usual Portland stone CWGC headstones. SO I would guess that the 2 you are looking for are family graves. Incidentally there isn't a war graves section as such in Beckett St, they are scattered wherever the family wanted them to be buried.

Thank you Mike and Gordon - that's a great help. I thought that there would be a dedicated War Graves section. I'll let you know what I find and if I'm successful I'll send photos of both the graves.

Hi Helen,
Welcome to YI.

The online database is here (http://www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1848) which carries a small subscription, which is fine if you have a lot of Leeds information you wish to acquire.
However, if you only have the 2 burials you wish to find, please post the details here and we will have a look for you.

Regards Gordon
