I have a great uncle who was buried in a War Grave in Beckett St Cemetery in 1918. How difficult would it be to find his headstone? I know that much of the cemetery is overgrown but are the War Graves well kept and how easy are they to find. Have any of these War Graves been photographed?
His details are: Private Frank Berry 6724 1st Battalion East Yorks Regiment. Died 26 Nov 1918. The grave reference from CWGC is C 10837. He lived at 10 Husler Grove, Chapeltown.
Any help would be very welcome.

Hi June,
Welcome to YI.
I photographed about 60% of the war graves in Beckett St. one lunchtime about 6 months ago, when I had a couple of hours to spare. The photos are on a different part of the YI website. (Home page, top right hand side written in red--online records, go to Source and then scroll down to Leeds Beckett St.) As for F. Berry, I didn't manage to photograph his grave which tells me it wasn't immediately obvious and possibly hidden. However, he cannot be far away from Henry Boyce who is in "C." 10764, if you look at his grave's photo you can see the area is not too bad.
I have intended to return a few times and finish them but what with one thing and another..............

Hello Gordon
Very many thanks for your quick reply. It's a pity you didn't find Frank Berry's headstone, but it begins to look as though it might be a family one, if it wasn't easily visible. His father, Thomas, is buried there - died in 1901. I'll try to have a look next time I'm in Leeds. Many years ago I used to work at St James's but never knew that I had any ancestors buried at the cemetery. I even have one just over the wall by the bus stop, so I was only a few yards away. It was even mentioned in the prologue in Sylvia Barnards book
Thanks for your help. I'll send a photo to the website if I manage to find the headstone.
Regards

Thanks June.
Mike has included Frank on the 'Their name liveth forevermore' (http://www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk/forums/links/showlink.php?do=showdetails&l=15493) database, with further details.

June If you can get access to Ancestry there are 7 Pages of his Service Record surviving
A pre war Regular then Reservist recalled in 1914 looks like TB took him. There are family details on one of the pages.

Gordon - many thanks for that - I did see it and was amazed at the speed with which Mike had added it - it was late last night!
Ady - thanks for the mention of Ancestry. I do have access and already have a copy of his papers. I've also seen the entry on the 1911 census when he was with the regiment in India.
