Looking for any info on John Thomas Dovener who married Mary Ellen Wallis from Bridlington. They had a son Thomas William Dovener born in 1891. They are on the 1891 census as Danner, when you look, it actually is Dovener. I believe at some point Mary Ellen could have married again although there is no record of a marriage but she appears on my grans birth certificate as Mary Ellen Pitts. Cant find aything on the Doveners or later Mary Ellen and William Pitts - any help with any of this - it's started to drive me up the wall!! would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Deb;)

John Thomas Dovenor was born 17th Dec 1867 in Leeds to Alice Roundhill who was unmarried. I have a copy of his birth certificate. She gave birth to a daughter Amelia Dovenor in 1869 also born out of wedlock. The two children use both the names Dovenor and Roundhill over the years. They were boarded out as children. They are on 1871 census named Roundall, on 1881 census as Roundhill, and on 1891 census Amelia is using the name Dovenor again, but is back to Roundhill on her marriage in 1883!! Alice married a widower Thomas Booth in 1874. I have not had much success in tracing a possible father of John Thomas and Amelia; there are two John Dovenors living in the right area of Leeds at this time both of whom could be candidates.
John Thomas married Mary Ellen Wallis from Bridlington in 1889 under the name Dovenor but is using the name Roundhill on the 1901 census. My granddad James William Roundhill was born to this marriage on 20th October 1890 and is called Roundhill on his birth certificate. (See 1901 census for other family members) I have a copy of his birth certificate. I have looked at the 1891 census under Danner (Dovenor) and I am sure that the child age 5 months (see original document) named as Thomas William is in fact my granddad James William as the address is Tab Street which is where James William was born and his age as shown on the census is correct.
Mary Ellen was remarried in 1915 to William Pitts using the name Roundhill. Are you descended from this marriage? I cannot find when John Thomas died.
Hope this information answers some of your queries.
Carole.

Hi Carol, thanks for your information, it is very interesting. My Grandma is called May McGough nee Pitts. Her mother was Mary Ellen Pitts nee Roundhill and father William Pitts. We know that she was married to a Dovener who at some point must have died and then married William Pitts and had my gran (who however is now dead). I haven't actually looked for a few months, I spent more time on it during the winter months, maybe its time to start again. Can let you have copies of what I have though. my email address is elliotdm01@leedslearning.net if you want to get in touch.
